Notes
Best season for this program: The rainy season, from June to December, is best for rafting.
Trek through the green mountain landscapes of the Venezuelan Andes
Descend to the floodplains of Los Llanos with some extreme rafting, riding, biking, canyoning and encounters with wildlife as well!
Explore gorgeous landscapes, valleys, mountain lagoons/lakes, villages — all at a pace that gives you time to appreciate your surroundings.
Day 1: Barinas
From the Barinas airport you will be transfered to our camp (55 Km from Barinas). The camp offers a natural swimming pool at the Acequia River which is one of the best rivers to swim, kayak, white water raft, and even do a bit of tubing/riverbug if you are up to it! All around the campground you find cultivations of tea, fruit trees and vegetables. If you feel like doing a bit of mountain biking, there is excellent mountain biking terrain near the camp. Bikes can be rented for those interested in enjoying this activity. Also, the camp has ping pong tables, beach volley ball courts, cards and chess games to play indoors.Overnight at a camp.
Day 2: Barinas
After a nice and filling Venezuelan breakfast get ready for your fist adventure! Today you will do white water raft along the Acequia River. After having received the safety instructions and training, raft down a grade 2-3 river with beautiful rainforest on both sides of the river. The run is around 1 hour depending on the water level. We will find some rocks to jump off and if you are up to it, try floating down the river! With a little bit of luck you might see some wild animals (iguanas, river otters) and exotic birds such as toucans, parrots or macaws. Return to the camp to relax. In the afternoon, grab a mountain bike and take sometime to explore the area. Overnight at a camp.
Day 3: Barinas - Mérida
In the morning, after breakfast, drive to the main entrance of the Siniguis river. The river offers some of the best white water rafting in Venezuela. Raft down a grade 4-5 river and go through the washing machine, the mixer, and the blender rapids.
At around noon you will be picked up from the camp and transferred to the Barinas bus station. When you arrive at the bus station, you will need to purchase a one-way bus ticket Merida ($15 per person). When you arrive in Merida (5-6 hrs latter), take a taxi to the hotel. Overnight at a hotel.
Note: Bus ticket and taxi expenses to your hotel in Merida are not included in the tour package.
Day 4: Mérida
Leave Mérida in the morning. Drive up through El Valle to La Culata - the departure point of our hike which lies at 2950 meters above sea level. We will walk for 3-4 hours, until we reach our first campsite which is at the foot of a waterfall in the mystic frailejon valley (3600 m.). Overnight in tents.
Day 5: Mérida
We start our day with a steep ascent until we reach Pico Pan De Azucar (4600 m.) Thin air at this altitude is normal. Weather permitting, we will see Bolivar and Humboldt Peaks and the northern side of the Maracaibo basin. We'll walk through a desert-like landscape until we reach the second campsite at the edge of a mountain lake (6-8 hours walking). Overnight in tents.
Day 6: Mérida
Descend for 3-4 hours to the jewel of the Sierra La Culata National Park. The natural hot springs lies at 3200 m is the perfect place to relax and forget about the icy nights (water temp. 32 - 38 C). Don't forget your towel and swimsuit! After lunch, we will walk to the place where we'll be picked up and transferred back to Mérida. Overnight at a hotel.
Day 7: Mérida
At 8:30 AM, leave Mérida City. Take a 30 minute jeep drive to the Canyoning location. Expect some amazing views of Mérida (perhaps the best available). After a 30 minute walk (mainly downhill) we reach the canyoning site. Some abseil training is given. Right after that it is time for the adventure of your life! There are several small "chutes" to slide down, a heart pounding 7- 8 meters natural hydro slide (where you will get airborne !!), and three powerful waterfalls to abseil (rappel) down including a 38 meters monster at the end. We will return to Mérida at around 3:00 p.m. (depending on number of people). The actual time in the canyon is around 4 hours aprox. Overnight at a hotel. END OF SERVICES.
