Gran Sabana is a land where you can still feel the divine breath of creation. It reminds us of the immensity of nature, myths and magic. It is where the English author Arthur Conan Doyle, set the scene for his novel “The Lost World.”
It is occupied by the mountain mass of the Guayanas, comprised of concentrations of ancient rocks, generally metamorphic, formed out of blocks of granite. The Pemónes (local Indians) call their lands "Wek-Tá" (Place of Mountains).
The principal sub-basin hydrology is shaped by the rivers Yuruaní, Aponwao, Kukenán, Suruku, Icabarú, Caruay, Urimán and Antabare.
In the summit of the Tepuys (Table Mountains) you find plenty of endemics species and on the mountain skirt, magnificent wildlife surrounded by green dense lands.
During the night stars glow. You look up and they seem so close that you want to extend your hands to touch them!Legends and spirits guide your steps along the way…
Day 1: Santa Elena - Gran Sabana (The Lost World)
In the morning we leave Santa Elena and head to the Jaspe waterfall - one of the most visited places in the Gran Sabana. It is a magical place and a unique waterfall where the action of flowing water has polished the bedrock of natural red jasper over hundreds of years to form glistening sheets of jasper. Local Indians call it Kako Paru, meaning ’fire creek’, because of the rocks fiery golden red glow. The water is so clear and pristine. After admiring the fall, we head to the waterslide of Soruape, a natural waterslide that is 30 meters in length.
After lunch, we head to the Pacheco waterfall where your guide will explain the unique vegetation of the area. At this place, we will find lots of insect eating plants. From 18 families of carnivore plants that exist worldwide, 5 species live in the Gran Sabana. We continue our journey to an ancient holy Indian place, where the natives used to ask the gods to make their wishes to come true. At this location, you will be able to appreciate an amazing panoramic view of six flat table mountains. The last waterfall of the day is the Kama waterfall. Overnight next to the Kama waterfall in beds with mosquito nets. The place is managed by an Indian family in the Canaima National Park.
Day 2: Gran Sabana (The Lost World)
After breakfast we leave our camp and head to the Indian Iboribo village where you will take a small boat to Chinak Meru, also known as Aponwao waterfall which is the highest waterfall in the region (107m). Return to the Indian village for lunch. After lunch, you will visit a place (mission) where the priests taught the native Indians to improve their agricultural techniques. After the excursion, we head to our camp in Kavanayen which is in the heart of the Gran Sabana. Overnight at a camp.
Day 3: Santa Elena - Gran Sabana (The Lost World)
After breakfast we enjoy a refreshing bath at the Kawi waterfall (8m) from where you will have an opportunity to jump into the water if you wish. Afterwards, walk to a viewpoint of the flat top mountains and have lunch in the Indian community of San Francisco. After lunch, we head to La Cortina waterfall.
