The Andes mountains stretch from Chile to Venezuela. In Venezuela, the Andean range is 495 km long and soars into high peaks, the highest being Pico Bolívar, at nearly 5000 m.
Every step you take in this extraordinary landscape — the unique páramo ecosystem with its tall frailejones; windy, mysterious deserts; and glacial lakes — makes you feel a part of it. It is a paradise for hikers and climbers.
The route to the top of Pico Bolivar (5,007 meters) is both spectacular and challenging.
The trail starts at La Mucuy. The path winds its way up through dense, tropical cloud forest. On the three-day ascent to the base of Bolivar, we will go by the stark and desert paramo. You will also camp on the shores of the biggest glacial lakes of the Venezuelan Andes.
Laguna Verde
(5 hours hiking; 6km)
Today we head to Laguna Verde (4,000 m) named for its brilliant emerald color and located at the base of the impressive Humboldt (4,992 m) and Bonplaud Peaks (4,890 m). The way to Laguna Verde is steeper and rockier than the previous day, and the scenery is much more open as you hike the valley upwards. We will set-up camp at Laguna Del Suero (4,200 m) which is nestled in the tranquil surroundings of these infamous peaks.
Day 3: Mérida
Laguna Timoncito
(4-7 hours hiking; 7.5 km)
After breakfast we hike west to Laguna Timoncito and face a steep uphill slope on loose rocks called “Chomahomaâ€. Once on top we will enjoy spectacular views. If you look toward the Barinas direction, you will marvel at how the savanna plains roll out from the bottom of this range. We’ll embark on a traverse, which runs along the backside of the range. Depending on the season, we may cross bare rock or snow covered landscape to Laguna Timoncito. We will camp at the base of Pico BolÃvar (4600 m).
Day 4: Mérida
Pico Bolivar
(6 hours climbing)
Early in the morning we will start the climb up to Pico Bolivar (5,007m). In this climb, we will face rock, snow, and glacier. This will require some technical support by our expert mountain guides. Once you reach the summit, you will be rewarded by the splendor of the natural surroundings. Overnight at the base of Pico BolÃvar.
Day 5: Mérida
Pico Espejo
(4-6 hours hiking; 5.6 km)
After breakfast, we’ll hike up to Pico Espejo (4765 m), which is the final station for the highest cable car system in the world. We’ll continue our trek down to the third cable car station, Loma Redonda (4000 m), where we’ll grab a hot drink and board the last cable car which will take us back to the city of Merida. We’ll arrive around 2 p.m. and drop you off at your hotel. End of services.
